Job Description The Academy for Global Citizenship is seeking an educator whose expertise and passion is working with middle school teachers and adolescents. This position is ideal for a knowledgeable middle school educator who believes in a collaborative leadership approach. Bilingual (English/Spanish) candidates and those with International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) experience are strongly encouraged to apply.

The Middle School Culture and Curriculum Coordinator supports teachers, leads the MYP IB authorization process and oversees the development of AGC’s MYP Programme. The coordinator reports to the Upper School Principal (grades 3-8) with whom they will collaborate to lead professional development and community events to make IB learning visible. Additionally, the coordinator is responsible for providing support for the MYP team and students in school culture. They will also serve as an advisor and lead, coordinator, and teach during flextime. The successful candidate will be a proven leader with a commitment to AGC’s mission and to advancing whole child wellness and sustainability through innovative educational opportunities. This individual will be a motivating leader and an effective coach who has demonstrated breakthrough outcomes in a similar school setting. Key Responsibilities:

Community Leadership

  • Uphold and support the school’s commitment to environmental sustainability, global citizenship, whole child wellness, and educational innovation through ensuring comprehensive curriculum integration and cultivating a mission-aligned school culture.

  • In close partnership with the Executive Director and Upper School Principal, support the continuous development and effective implementation of the school’s instructional program and services leading to the academic success of all 468 students through the International Baccalaureate (IB) program and Dual Language Program.

  • Foster and facilitate AGC’s democratic school model by working with the Executive Director and Upper School Principal to recommend procedures for input and decision making.

  • Stay current with trends, research, and methodology in instructional techniques, technology, multicultural content, problem-solving and interdisciplinary connections.

  • Collaborate with the 6-8 team to plan mission-aligned 8th-grade trips and events, including graduation, and the 8th-grade service-learning trip.

  • Work with the Upper School Principal and others to manage the high school admissions and transition process. Academic Leadership

  • Coach 6-8 staff, identify and coordinate professional development needs and opportunities and ensure PD and programmatic alignment is maintained with the school’s overall mission and vision.

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and Upper School Principal to periodically review and recommend school policies and procedure revisions, the annual school budget and calendar.

  • Coordinate and carry out a weekly schedule of curriculum planning meetings with 6-8 teachers and maintain clear documentation of curriculum and unit planners.

  • Lead the development and documentation of AGC’s Subject Group Overview and Scope and Sequence in alignment with the IB and Common Core Standards.

  • Collaborate with the Upper School Principal to develop and implement the MYP assessment strategy with keen attention to ATL skills development and student academic growth.

  • Distribute all relevant MYP publications and maintain a professional library to support MYP work.

  • Collaborate with the Special Education Teachers and 6-8 case manager to ensure students with disabilities’ needs are being met through the MYP.

  • Develop and lead the orientation and on-boarding of new teachers into the MYP; co-teach and model lessons and differentiation strategies.

  • Coach and co-facilitate collaborative teams to use formative assessments and data to drive instructional planning. Assist with data analysis to drive instructional planning. Facilitates intervention analysis and implementation.

  • Develop and extend AGC’s dual-language into middle school, including curriculum development, professional development in dual language best practices and fostering collaborative relationships with other dual language middle school programs.

  • As necessary, assume the role of a substitute general education teacher.

    Communication Leadership

  • Act as the liaison between the school and the International Baccalaureate Organization.

  • Spearhead the MYP authorization process (and reauthorization in subsequent years); prepare and submit documentation required on an ongoing basis to ensure all MYP requirements are met.

  • Provide outreach to the wider MYP community through Online Curriculum Center discussion forums, e-mail and school visits.

  • Establish and maintain links with other MYP schools, particularly in Chicago Public Schools.

  • Collaborate with the PYP Coordinator to ensure a strong and cohesive tie of the IB continuum at AGC.

  • Plans and facilitates events, student, parent, and community meetings and information sessions that promote awareness of the IB program during and outside the instructional day. School Culture for MYP

  • Respond to urgent behavioral issues for MYP Students.

  • In collaboration with the Upper School Principal, approach school culture proactively; develop relationships and check-ins with students and families as needed.

  • Support the planning of workshops to educate families on school-related topics that relate to school culture.

  • In collaboration with the Upper School Principal, continue to develop an AGC discipline handbook/policy. ● Support teachers in setting up and implementing the following: Responsive Classroom-based environments, Mindful Practices and mindfulness, restorative justice practices.

  • Coordinate mental health services for MYP students.

  • Facilitate the involvement of students in school decision-making and assist with Student Council.

  • Mediate conflicts among students, families, and teachers, and lead restorative justice circles as needed.

  • Support social-emotional curriculum and provide staff development and support in bringing curriculum alive.

  • Participate in hiring processes.

  • Be ready to sub or take on duties when there is an emergency situation.

  • Develop a relationship with ACC and collaborate on items that relate to school culture.

    Teaching in the MYP

    Advisory

  • Act as the primary point person/contact for the student and family during the year.

  • Co-lead (with student) parent conferences.

  • Be a central contact for the subject teachers and Upper School Principal for support around academic and social/emotional struggles.

    Flextime

  • Plan and support team in implementing flextime to MYP students

  • Teach/Lead a flextime group through electives or structured study hall

    Required Skills and Experience:

  • 5+ years (ideal) experience as an educator

  • Bilingual and biliterate (English/Spanish) - preferred

  • Familiarity with IB (MYP)

  • Familiarity with inquiry-based teaching

  • Believer in culturally relevant teaching

  • Strong leadership, communication skills and personal drive

  • Ability to maintain a safe, orderly environment

  • Proven ability to play a lead role in their craft

  • Experience with MTSS process and accommodating students with IEPs in the classroom Education Requirements: ● Bachelor Degree in Education

  • Middle School Endorsement

  • Master’s Degree in education or related fields (ideal)

  • State of Illinois Teaching Certificate in relevant area

  • Endorsement or extensive experience in ELL instruction (ideal)
